Conservative journalist, Ross Douthat has been doing some inner soul-searching about the fact that he has bailed on his initial love of Sarah Palin. In so doing, he comes up with a very interesting point.
Sarah Palin was as fringe as Mike Huckabee was when he first appeared on the national scene. Huckabee rose to the occasion, Palin does not seem to be. As Douthat notes:
But the fact remains that she has given one fine speech, and two lackluster interviews, and has otherwise dodged the sort of rough-and-tumble venues and conversations that Huckabee welcomed, and which he used to make his candidacy for president seem more plausible than it initially appeared.
Amidst all the insanity and frighteningly un-democratic effort to protect Palin from the press, this bit of a reality check struck me as quite on the mark. So on the mark that I'd had the thought myself!
It occurred to me early on that had McCain picked Huckabee there would be a lot less polarizing, sickness swirling around -- and a lot more worried Dems. Quite simply, I always thought Huckabee would have been a better pick. But then I don't get a vote on that one.
In the end, it remains true that regardless of what the guys at the water cooler are saying, there are plenty of Republicans and not a few Independents who are worried about her; and worried about the reasons why McCain picked her. And well they should be.
But hey, works for me...

I find the Palin 'buyer's remorse' fascinating. It reminds me of the sex in the city episode where Charlotte goes to a wedding, meets a guy, dates him, meets his parents, and breaks up all in the span of the wedding reception...
Yes, the buyer's remorse is amazing. The only thing I didn't add is whether there will be enough time for said remorse to trickle down to the populace. We can only hope.
