We have been having a difficult time with our older son lately. Not sure what it is made of but it isn't pretty. And, it is bringing out the ugly in both mommy and daddy as well.
To my mind nothing makes you feel more like a helpless child than parenting. There are times when
I just want to scream and shout
"I want my mommy." It is a helpless out of control feeling. Not unlike what a child must feel like some of the time.
It is at those times that I most need to remember there is a Parent to whom I can turn. An energy upon which I can rest.
Often, I forget.
I awoke this morning with the words to my favorite hymn rolling around my head. Perhaps it was a gentle nudge from that Source tapping me on the shoulder...
Hey, you...I'm here if you need me.
Looking for the words, I found
This video. It isn't great, but it is the closest to Van Morrison's rendition which I love.
The words were derived from an ancient Irish poem and date back to the 3rd century. The first 2 verses are my favorites...
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art.
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word;
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father, I Thy true son;
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
Be Thou my battle Shield, Sword for the fight;
Be Thou my Dignity, Thou my Delight;
Thou my soul’s Shelter, Thou my high Tower:
Raise Thou me heavenward, O Power of my power.
Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise,
Thou mine Inheritance, now and always:
Thou and Thou only, first in my heart,
High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.
High King of Heaven, my victory won,
May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun!
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.
