One of the calling cards of Obama's campaign has been the reminder LOUD AND CLEAR that politics happens from the bottom up, not the top down. I have experienced countless examples of these words in action.
Yesterday, the entire Obama delegation from all 50 states was dispatched across the city of Denver for A Delegate Day of Service. Organized through the national web site, we had the opportunity to sign up months ago...yesterday was the day.
Several of us from New Jersey went to a Denver Food Bank sorting station set up in the parking lot of a hotel. There we met up with others from Indiana, and Washington State. In just a few short hours we unloaded, sorted and repacked 4.5 tons of donated food items. The gentleman in charge from Denver's Volunteers of America was in tears when he admitted that he doubted we would have time to finish, but in fact did so 1/2 hour ahead of schedule.
With a little will, the desire to make a difference and some elbow grease ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference.
Yes we can.
