Every day our lives are filled with making decisions based on our beliefs. We do the best we can according to those beliefs -- and yet sometimes our judgments do limit us.
From personal experience I can say that we make conclusions about people based on how they look, what they wear, what is in their shopping cart at the grocery store, their accent, how they speak to their children...and, in fact, how their children behave in the playground. (and the list goes on...)
When we become aware that our lives are filled with these pre-conceived assessments, we realize how limiting they can sometimes be. I try to help my children understand this, in an effort to encourage them to be more loving, more accepting of difference and generally more open to the world around them.
The point is not to eliminate our judgements of the world around us...only to be aware of how they may limit our experience of life, and the people we may meet along the journey.
I am going to show them THIS VIDEO as soon as they get home from school. As you watch it, ask yourself what you think of this woman BEFORE she opens her mouth...it is quite a surprise.
___________
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged; do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven; give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.” Luke 6:37
